Riot Games has announced that League of Legends Classic is launching for free on July 29, bringing back a curated greatest hits experience modeled after the 2012-2013 era of the game.
Riot Games is officially taking a trip down memory lane. Following a wave of leaks and a reveal during the MSI 2026 Finals, the studio announced that League of Legends Classic will launch on July 29 as part of Patch 26.15. Rather than requiring a separate download or client, the mode will be integrated directly into the existing Riot Client for free. According to Executive Producer Paul Bellezza, the project originated during an internal hackathon and serves as a greatest hits collection centered around the 2012 to 2013 era rather than a strict 1.0 snapshot. Players can expect the return of classic champion select, older rune setups, and the vintage mastery system featuring offense, defense, and utility trees.
The mode will launch with the original 40 champions alongside 20 additional fan favorites from that era. This nostalgic pivot mirrors a broader trend across the live-service landscape where long-running games lean into their past to re-engage lapsed players. Much like World of Warcraft Classic, Fortnite OG, and Overwatch Classic, these throwback offerings acknowledge how far these titles have evolved while giving communities a chance to revisit the mechanics and metas that hooked them originally. It is a fascinating evolution for multiplayer ecosystems, proving that gaming history now runs deep enough to warrant its own preservation.
For the massive cross-platform and streaming audience that grew up watching the evolution of competitive play, this drop offers a great excuse to squad up and relive old memories. We will see how well the old-school balance holds up when Patch 26.15 goes live on July 29 at 8 a.m. PDT. You can read the original reporting over at Polygon.
