Sony Animation and Netflix hit KPop Demon Hunters has earned two Oscar nominations for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song, cementing its status as a massive cultural crossover hit.
The crossover juggernaut that captured the internet last summer is officially making a play for Hollywood gold. Sony Animation and Netflix hit KPop Demon Hunters has secured two nominations at the 98th Academy Awards, picking up nods for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for the track Golden. This follows a massive awards season run that already includes wins at the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards, proving that the animated feature is much more than a fleeting streaming trend. For players and digital natives who watched the phenomenon dominate TikTok feeds and Spotify playlists alike, the recognition feels entirely earned.
Directed at the intersection of gaming culture, creator streams, and modern fandom, the film follows the dual lives of virtual idols Huntr/x as they balance arena tours by day with supernatural demon battles by night. Beyond the catchy music and striking visuals, the project has been smashing records since its debut. It previously claimed the crown as the most-watched Netflix Original, dethroning Red Notice, while its soundtrack made chart history as the first all-women collective to top the Billboard Hot 100 since 2001. When voice actors Ejae, Rei Ami, and Audrey Nuna recently brought the soundtrack to late-night television, it solidified the project's staying power in mainstream entertainment.
The feature now faces heavy hitters like Disney productions Zootopia 2 and Elio in the Best Animated Feature category, while Golden competes alongside tracks like Sinners' I Lied to You. As streaming platforms increasingly intersect with gaming and interactive media, this kind of crossover success highlights how modern digital culture drives mainstream pop culture. We will find out if Huntr/x takes home the gold when the 98th Academy Awards broadcast on March 15. You can read the original coverage over at Polygon [.
