Square Enix used the D23 showcase to reveal Pixar's Coco as the first new world in Kingdom Hearts 4 alongside a substantial gameplay trailer.
Square Enix and Disney finally delivered a major update on Kingdom Hearts 4 during the D23 Entertainment Showcase, confirming that Pixar's Coco will serve as the setting for the game's first newly revealed world. The trailer, originally reported by Eurogamer, opens in the vibrant Land of the Dead where Sora sports custom skull face paint for the Dia de los Muertos theme. Teaming up with Miguel and Hector, players get a clear look at combat featuring a brand new Coco themed Keyblade.
While Sora handles the Land of the Dead, Donald and Goofy take center stage in a separate sequence of the footage. The pair are shown searching for their missing friend across the Underworld and within Quadratum, the strikingly realistic Tokyo inspired hub city first teased back in 2022. This massive gameplay drop is a welcome relief for fans who have waited years through a prolonged period of silence from the development team regarding concrete progress.
This showcase comes on the heels of some turbulent PR for Square Enix, which recently had to forcefully deny community accusations that it used generative AI to promote the Kingdom Hearts Collection 1-3. After weeks of scrutiny, the publisher clarified that the controversial assets were strictly the result of human error rather than automated tools. With the air cleared on that front, player attention can pivot entirely back to the sprawling narrative horizons of Sora's next epic adventure.
