Kick Bridges the Gap Between Beautiful Game and Precision Platforming

Kick is an upcoming indie platformer that turns football mechanics into a vibrant, skill-based sidescroller, offering a clever alternative for players who usually skip sports games.
Sports titles and traditional platformers rarely cross paths, but a new indie project is finding the sweet spot between the two genres. As reported by Rock Paper Shotgun, upcoming indie release Kick translates the fundamentals of football into a precision sidescroller. Players control a teenager navigating his daily commute to school while keeping a football in constant motion ahead of him, utilizing a mix of gentle dribs, high lobs, sliding tackles, and stylish windmill kicks.
The gameplay loop relies on a delicate balance of spatial awareness and timing. You have to dodge urban obstacles like delivery workers and pedestrians while keeping your ball under control. Accumulating too many fouls from stray collisions results in a yellow card, and multiple cautions lead to a red card that resets your progress to the start of the stage. Along the way, players can collect currency to unlock various custom footballs, adding a nice layer of progression to the challenge.
While traditional sports games lean heavily into simulation and heavy license updates, titles like Kick prove that creative genre blending can pull in players who normally skip the genre entirely. The vibrant aesthetic and demanding physics create an engaging arcade experience without requiring any real world sports knowledge. You can currently test out the mechanics yourself through a playable demo on Steam, with the full release slated for November.
