Key Fairy: Pacifist Bullet-Hell? Sounds Mad, Actually Works, Mate.

*Key Fairy* is a delightfully weird hand-drawn bullet-hell where you befriend your enemies instead of blasting them, and honestly, it sounds like the perfect antidote to all the serious, blockchain-obsessed games out there. Rock Paper Shotgun says it's good, so that's good enough for me!

Right, so Rock Paper Shotgun (bless 'em) stumbled across something delightfully bonkers, and fair dinkum, I had to share. Nic Reuben over there brought *Key Fairy* to my attention, and honestly, the description alone is enough to make you spit out your tea: "hand-drawn, pacifist, folkloric bullet-hell." I mean, come *on*.

Now, I'm usually allergic to buzzwords and anything described as "revolutionary" (especially if it involves blockchain!), but *Key Fairy* sounds genuinely intriguing. You're zipping around a hand-drawn forest, grappling, collecting stars, and befriending the baddies instead of blasting them to smithereens. One early enemy, a Bugle (think big-eyed bat-winged…thing), becomes your mate after you collect enough stars. It even apologises! It's all very polite, really.

The world, brought to life with layered electronic music and this lovely art style (which, apparently, you can tweak the colour palette of – monochrome bullet-hell, anyone?), genuinely sounds like a place you'd want to hang out. Reuben mentions cyclopean worms chanting about “eels of creation,” and honestly, that's the kind of weirdness I'm here for. Forget your gritty reboots; give me eels!

The demo's up on Steam, and even the game's description is pure poetry: "An adventure made just for you! We forged this forest out of blood, and ink, and thought. Come, join us for a while, we are only small, and there is space enough to share." Who *writes* like that anymore? I'm instantly sold.

The game promises:

* Dozens of unique monsters * Fast paced, frenetic engagements * Trinkets by the bagful, for you to collect * Whimsy hundreds of hand-crafted rooms * People, with hopes and dreams * Sounds (if you walk softly, you may hear them) * The truth * An ungodly quantity of keys * Pages and pages of hand-drawn art * A sword! (not to be used as a weapon) * No secrets. we promise there are no secrets in the forest...

See that last point? Yeah, I bet there are secrets. Loads of 'em. That's just good game design.

No release date for the full game yet, but if you're after something a bit different – something that doesn't involve crafting endless swords to sell for crypto – *Key Fairy* looks like a proper breath of fresh air. Well worth checking out the demo, if you ask me. Forget your blockchain battles for a bit, go befriend some bat-winged bugles.
