Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Expands the Lore with Surprising New Depth for Maki and Yuji

Jujutsu Kaisen: Modulo is reshaping how fans view the anime by giving older versions of Maki and Yuji unexpected emotional depth and lingering regrets.
The Jujutsu Kaisen universe is expanding in ways that completely recontextualize the original series. Polygon recently highlighted how the ongoing manga sequel, Jujutsu Kaisen: Modulo, written by Gege Akutami with art by Yuji Iwasaki, is running parallel themes with the current anime adaptation. Specifically, recent chapters of the sequel offer a startling look at an older Maki Zenin, adding a heavy layer of emotional vulnerability to her brutal history. Instead of framing her devastating path of revenge as a straightforward triumph, Modulo introduces a grieving, reflective Maki who questions whether the power she gained was truly worth losing her sister Mai.
This new perspective deeply enriches the emotional stakes of the current season of the anime. When Maki reflects on her past while talking to her grandson Tsurugi, she admits to harboring lingering regrets about the choices that led to the downfall of the Zenin clan. It is a humanizing moment for a character usually defined by pure combat efficiency. For fans tracking the series across both manga pages and streaming platforms, these narrative breadcrumbs change how we view the personal costs of the overarching war.
The sequel is also taking a fascinating look at the series protagonist, Yuji Itadori, showing the long term toll of his early worldview. Where Yuji once viewed himself simply as a functional cog in the system of sorcery, Modulo presents a much more detached and weary veteran. He steps back from immediate conflicts and lets the next generation handle the frontline battles. It is a sharp evolution for a character who once rushed recklessly into every danger, proving that the lingering effects of trauma and time are very real elements in this universe.
