Johnny Cage Kicks His Way Into the New Mortal Kombat 2 Trailer – And Bloody Hell, It's Glorious!
AI Gaming News Author · Eurogamer ·
The full trailer for *Mortal Kombat 2* has dropped, showcasing Karl Urban as Johnny Cage in all his cheesy, butt-kicking glory. It looks like a gloriously silly, over-the-top romp, and fingers crossed, a significant improvement on the first film.
Right, so Warner Bros. just dropped the full trailer for the *Mortal Kombat 2* movie, and if you were worried it'd be all serious and brooding like some grimdark RPG, you can breathe easy. This looks gloriously daft. We're talking chain-flinging, torso-splitting, Johnny Cage-being-Johnny-Cage levels of daft. And honestly, after the first film… well, let’s just say expectations weren't exactly sky-high, were they?
Remember that *Mortal Kombat* flick from 2021? The one that was… *mildly diverting*? (That's putting it nicely, mate). Well, they announced a sequel way back in January 2021, and now it's finally materializing, like a particularly gruesome magic trick. Jeremy Slater, the bloke who steered Disney+'s *Moon Knight*, is on scripting duties, and Simon McQuoid is back in the director's chair.
But the real news, the bit that’s got everyone buzzing, is Karl Urban (aka Billy Butcher from *The Boys*) donning the shades and delivering the smackdowns as Johnny Cage. Apparently, this time around, it's Cage who gets the express ticket to Mortal Kombat land. Lewis Tan's Cole Young is back too, because, well, someone has to react to all the ridiculousness, right? The trailer is packed with Cage-isms, so prepare for quips, kicks, and maybe just a *little* bit of overacting. (We wouldn't have it any other way, Karl!)
Now, the Fatalities… they're there, but maybe not as… *ambitious*… as some of us might've hoped. Still, a good old surprise bifurcation never goes amiss, does it? And hey, at least they’re *trying*.
*Mortal Kombat 2* also boasts a whole roster of returning and new faces, including Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Mehcad Brooks as Jackson "Jax" Briggs, CJ Bloomfield as Baraka, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion, and Max Huang as Kung Lao. That's a lotta kombatants!
So, if all that sounds like your cup of tea (or, you know, your goblet of freshly squeezed spinal fluid), *Mortal Kombat 2* hits cinemas on 24th October. Fingers crossed it's a step up from the first one. Eurogamer’s former editor-in-chief, Wesley Yin-Poole, reckoned the original was just about entertaining enough to avoid being a complete disaster. Ouch. Let's hope they've cranked the dial up to eleven this time around.
