JJ Abrams and Left 4 Dead Designer Team Up for New Sci-Fi Co-Op Shooter 4:Loop

Bad Robot Games and designer Mike Booth revealed 4:Loop at The Game Awards, a new sci-fi co-op shooter coming to PS5 and PC featuring frantic combat and 3D printed respawns.

During The Game Awards, Bad Robot Games took the stage alongside Sony to pull back the curtain on 4:Loop, a brand new co-op shooter being developed in collaboration with Left 4 Dead designer Mike Booth. Heading to PlayStation 5 and Windows PC, the game combines high stakes sci-fi action with a clever narrative justification for constant respawns. Set after a devastating alien invasion wipes out most of humanity, the premise tasks surviving players with waging a relentless futuristic war against the invaders. Instead of traditional time travel, dying simply means your character is printed right back into the fight using a horribly advanced 3D printer.

Mike Booth noted during the presentation that the team is building an unpredictable and challenging combat sandbox designed around improvisation and teamwork, drawing directly from the lessons learned while creating Left 4 Dead. The initial teaser trailer showcases plenty of signature cinematic set pieces and a distinct sense of humor, which feels right at home given JJ Abrams' background in film and television. It positions itself as an intriguing entry into the crowded co-op genre, especially for groups looking for a fresh challenge that relies heavily on coordination rather than straightforward gunplay.

While an official release date has not been announced yet, players can already add the title to their wishlists on Steam and the PlayStation Store. As the co-op landscape continues to evolve on modern platforms, combining cinematic presentation with a director-driven sandbox format gives this project plenty of potential. We will be keeping a close eye on how the combat loop and progression systems shape up as development continues.
