Jagex Announces Unreal Engine RuneScape MMO and Animated Series with MoistCr1TiKaL

Jagex announced a fourth Unreal Engine-powered RuneScape MMO and an animated series featuring creator MoistCr1TiKaL at RuneFest.

Jagex used RuneFest to reveal that a fourth MMO in the franchise is officially in the works, alongside a brand new animated adaptation. While it is currently carrying the working title RS4, this upcoming project is being built in Unreal Engine to target a new generation of players. Set in the familiar world of Gielinor during the Sixth Age, the game will kick off in Ashenfall, a region first introduced in RuneScape: Dragonwilds. Jagex confirmed that RS4 is very early in development and is not meant to replace existing titles, but rather sit alongside RuneScape, Old School RuneScape, and Dragonwilds as a complementary experience.

To ensure the community stays looped in from day one, Jagex is leaning into a co-development approach similar to the strategy that kept Old School thriving. The team shared that announcing the project this early allows them to build on technical foundations laid during the development of Dragonwilds while engaging players early in the design cycle. Each game in the franchise will maintain its own dedicated team and ongoing roadmap, meaning fans of the classic point-and-click style or active live service updates do not need to worry about their current virtual homes shutting down.

Beyond games, the franchise is expanding into television with an animated adaptation produced in partnership with Lyrical Media and internet personality Charlie White, widely known as MoistCr1TiKaL. With over three hundred million accounts created across twenty-five years of history, Jagex is clearly positioning RuneScape as a multi-generational entertainment universe. IGN South Africa reported on the announcements straight from the convention floor, highlighting a massive growth phase for one of gaming's longest-running live service pillars.
