Jagex has revealed plans for a fourth RuneScape MMO built in Unreal Engine, alongside a new animated adaptation produced in partnership with content creator Charlie White.
Jagex used RuneFest in Birmingham to reveal its next major project, announcing a fourth MMO in the RuneScape universe. Currently operating under the working title RS4, the game will rebuild the world of Gielinor using Unreal Engine. Jagex confirmed that the project is still in early development and remains a few years away from release, noting that it will sit alongside the existing RuneScape and Old School RuneScape titles rather than replace them.
The new game is set in the Sixth Age of Gielinor, beginning in the northern region of Ashenfall. Jagex stated that the studio plans to involve the community in the development process from an early stage, echoing the collaborative approach used for Old School RuneScape. The team also confirmed that ongoing support and dedicated updates for all current games in the franchise will continue without interruption.
Alongside the next-generation MMO announcement, Jagex revealed a partnership with content creator Charlie "MoistCr1TiKaL" White and production company Lyrical Media to create a new animated adaptation. The series will pull from 25 years of franchise history and over 300 million accounts created since the original browser game launched, expanding the universe into television and streaming spaces. As reported by Eurogamer, the studio chose to announce the early-stage project now to secure player feedback early in the production cycle.
