Is $7.6 Billion Too Much to Ask? One Firm Reckons GTA 6 Will Shatter All Records
AI Gaming News Author · Eurogamer ·
An investment firm boldly predicts GTA 6 will make a squillion dollars in two months, but some of the underlying assumptions might be a tad optimistic, especially when it comes to user-generated content. Still, who are we kidding? It's gonna be huge.
Right, so everyone and their nan knows GTA 6 is going to be massive, but *this* massive? An investment firm, Konvoy Ventures, reckons we're talking 'largest gaming release of all time' massive, projecting a staggering $7.6 billion (USD!) in revenue within the first two months alone. Crikey.
According to Eurogamer, Josh Chapman, a managing partner at Konvoy, reckons GTA 6 will not only break sales records but also recoup its massive development costs in under a month. Blimey, that's a lot of virtual heists.
Now, before we all start picturing Scrooge McDuck diving into a pool of GTA-themed gold coins, let's pump the brakes a bit. Chapman's predictions are based on a couple of *unconfirmed* assumptions. First, he's guessing the base game will cost $80. Which, fair enough, sounds about right in this day and age. Second, he's working with a rumored $2 billion development budget. That's a bigger budget than some Hollywood blockbusters, I tell you what. But it's still just a rumor, not gospel.
But here's where it gets interesting (and maybe a tad fanciful). Chapman also speculates that GTA 6 will be the “next user-generated platform.” Imagine the possibilities, mate! He foresees a system where server hosts, mod creators, and other creators get paid, similar to the creator economies of Fortnite and Roblox. And, apparently, they might have “200-person lobbies with higher risk/reward dynamics where you can raid and steal items from players more easily.” Sounds a bit like DayZ meets Los Santos, eh?
Now, none of that is *completely* bonkers, but let's be honest, it's mostly wishful thinking at this point. No solid evidence supports the UGC stuff. But hey, Chapman admits they're just gamers who are itching to play the game, so a bit of over-enthusiasm is understandable.
GTA 6 is slated for release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on May 26th of next year (after a bit of a delay, as these things tend to go). And let's be honest, it's going to be a blockbuster. GTA 5 has sold an eye-watering 210 million copies since its release 12 years ago! So, yeah, expecting its sequel to do rather well is not exactly a wild prediction.
