Insomniac's Marvel's Wolverine Leaks Reveal Cut Characters and Combat Overhauls

Leaked development documents from Game Rant reveal that Insomniac Games cut characters like Nightcrawler and abandoned complex DualSense trigger mechanics during the development of Marvel's Wolverine.
As reported by Game Rant following massive data leaks from a December 2023 cyberattack, Insomniac Games made several significant changes during the development of Marvel's Wolverine. Early drafts of the game originally featured the fan-favorite mutant Nightcrawler as an ally during the Madripoor section. However, Marvel reportedly objected to limiting such a prominent X-Men character to a single area, leading Insomniac to swap him for Jubilee before eventually settling on Tyger Tiger for that role.
The leaks also highlight abandoned gameplay mechanics, including a miniature crossbow tool that Marvel felt did not fit the character of Logan. Most notably, Insomniac spent roughly two years experimenting with separate left and right claw attacks mapped to the PlayStation 5 DualSense triggers. While early testing went reasonably well, the studio ultimately abandoned the system over concerns about accessibility, responsiveness, and scope, opting instead for a more traditional control scheme.
Development documents indicate that the game's overall structure was streamlined from early semi-open-world concepts into a linear, globe-trotting single-player adventure. Even so, certain cut concepts managed to return, such as a proto-Sentinel boss battle that was initially dropped in late 2022. Players will finally see how these pieces fit together when Marvel's Wolverine launches exclusively for the PlayStation 5 on September 15, 2026.
