Insomniac has clarified that Marvel's Wolverine will be fully playable on disc at launch, offering a complete physical experience as Sony prepares to phase out physical media by 2028.
Insomniac has confirmed that Marvel's Wolverine will be fully playable straight off the disc when it launches for the PlayStation 5 on September 15. Speaking with Eurogamer, senior project director Jess Reiner-Reed assured players that the physical release will contain the full game without forcing an immediate mandatory download just to get started. Head of technology Mike Fitzgerald added that the team is still utilizing the remaining months before release to polish the experience, encouraging players to grab the day one patch for final bug fixes and tweaks.
This physical completeness feels increasingly rare, and it arrives amid a contentious backdrop for PlayStation hardware and software. Sony previously announced plans to phase out physical game disc production by January 2028. That upcoming shift has sparked heavy pushback from the community over consumer rights, the end of the second-hand market, and digital storefront monopolies. Even though Insomniac's upcoming title avoids the empty-disc trap, promotional trailers have still faced an influx of fan frustration directed at Sony's broader physical media policies.
Beyond the release format, Insomniac has shared new details on how the game actually plays, contrasting it with their previous work on the Spider-Man series. Marvel's Wolverine takes a much more linear approach, dropping the sprawling open-world city hubs in favor of a focused campaign. True to the character, the studio also confirmed that the combat embraces a notably higher level of violence to match Logan's signature style.
