Insomniac Clarifies the X-Men and Spider-Man's Role in Marvel's Wolverine

Insomniac Games has confirmed that the X-Men do not exist in Marvel's Wolverine, and Spider-Man will only appear via Easter eggs, focusing instead on Logan's early history and gameplay mechanics tied to characters like Jean Grey and Sabretooth.

Insomniac Games has shared fresh details on Marvel's Wolverine, confirming that the iconic superhero team does not exist in the game's universe. According to an interview with Eurogamer by Robert Purchese, creative director Marcus Smith explained that mutants are not yet widely known or organized as the X-Men. Instead, the story focuses heavily on Logan and his early days with Team X alongside characters like Sabretooth, while keeping the broader mutant population vulnerable to those seeking to exploit or destroy them.

While the X-Men are absent, players will still cross paths with several major Marvel figures. Jean Grey and Mystique both appear in trailers, and developers confirmed that Jean plays an active role in combat. Her psionic abilities allow her to suspend enemies for combo takedowns, and she can even hold her own independently or coordinate with Logan during stealth segments. Players can expect similar mechanical partnerships with other characters throughout the campaign, though relationships like Logan and Sabretooth's will be defined by friction and banter.

As for Insomniac's other major Marvel hero, Peter Parker lives in the same universe, but do not expect a sprawling crossover. The studio noted that any nods to Spider-Man will strictly take the form of subtle Easter eggs rather than a full team-up. By narrowing the scope to Logan's specific corner of the Marvel universe, Insomniac is carving out a distinct, character-driven identity for its upcoming release without relying on a crowded roster of familiar heroes from the start.
