Asobo Studio breaks down the creative challenges, character growth, and mechanical shifts behind the newly released prequel, Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy.
Asobo Studio is back with Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, launching on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. IGN recently caught up with Asobo co-founder and game director David Dedeine alongside voice actor Anna Demetriou at gamescom to discuss how this prequel shifts the focus to Sophia and her journey to the Minotaur's island. Shifting away from Amicia and Hugo meant the team needed some fresh air after spending seven years in the same universe, while still maintaining the core tone players expect.
Demetriou noted that stepping back into the role felt natural, largely thanks to a collaborative writing process with lead writer Carol Ann BaƱuls. That creative freedom allowed the team to flesh out Sophia's backstory so that her trajectory seamlessly connects to her appearance in Requiem. For players who live for narrative depth and character-driven storytelling, this prequel offers a satisfying expansion of the lore without feeling like a forced retread.
Of course, taking a step back from the main series also meant shaking up the gameplay mechanics. Dedeine confirmed that the iconic rat swarms have been retired in favor of a new, highly dynamic threat kept under wraps for launch. Combined with a heavier emphasis on melee combat and a brand new narrative curse, Asobo is taking bold swings that current-gen players can experience right now.
