Indie Classic Knytt Lands a Surprise Steam Port and Stays Entirely Free

The 2006 indie platformer Knytt has received a surprise, free Steam port featuring controller support, Steam Deck compatibility, and new difficulty modes.

If you want a masterclass in atmospheric exploration, you can now grab Knytt Classic on Steam without spending a dime. Originally released back in 2006 by solo developer Nifflas, this breezy platformer trades intense stress for a tranquil soundtrack and the simple joy of gathering spaceship parts across blocky alienscapes. Rock Paper Shotgun notes that the new port comes courtesy of Bit Kid, the developers behind Wolfhound, with the original creator's full blessing.

While the core game remains faithful to its roots, the modern port brings some welcome upgrades for today hardware. You now get full controller support out of the box, making it a natural fit for handheld gaming PCs like the Steam Deck. Bit Kid also tossed in achievements, optional time tracking for speedruns, and three fresh difficulty modes. One of those modes, titled Knytt XH, even comes courtesy of Baba Is You developer Arvi Teikari.

Knytt always blurred the line between a straightforward platformer and an exploratory Metroidvania, leaning heavily into pure curiosity and wandering off the beaten path. Giving a twenty year old indie darling a pixel perfect refresh for modern platforms is a win for preservation, and keeping it entirely free makes it an easy download for anyone's library.
