Immortality developer Sam Barlow has announced Precognition, a sci-fi horror game written in collaboration with Brandon Cronenberg that explores branching futures through futuristic memory manipulation.
Sam Barlow and the team at Half Mermaid Productions have pulled back the curtain on their next narrative experiment, a sci-fi horror game titled Precognition. Originally conceived during a daydream about an FMV take on Metroid, the project pairs Barlow with writer and filmmaker Brandon Cronenberg. Following the cinematic puzzle mechanics of Immortality, this new title shifts the focus from uncovering past footage to navigating branching futures through the eyes of a protagonist experiencing memories from times yet to come.
During a recent development showcase hosted by publishing label Kinetic, Barlow explained that Precognition centers on a 1990s brain-chip experiment gone sideways. Players will guide a child prodigy named Diana as she weaves between alternate timelines by committing to specific futuristic visions, drawing loose thematic inspiration from films like Memento and Strange Days. While initially pitched internally as a manageable cooldown project after the grueling development of Immortality, the scope quickly expanded into a massive web of branching possibilities.
Cronenberg brings his signature brand of unsettling, deeply personal body horror to the writers' room, collaborating with Half Mermaid to craft scenes that lean heavily into a single character's distorted perspective. Despite the immense complexity of mapping out so many potential futures, Barlow aims for a sense of organic discovery comparable to open-world exploration. Set for a spring 2028 release, Precognition looks to push interactive storytelling into increasingly dark and experimental territory.
