While IGN SA covered a Sony State of Play, they put a spotlight on their Pride 2025 celebration video highlighting queer voices in horror with Nicole Maines and Michael Varrati, proving gaming's more than just goblin slaying.
Alright, so Sony's State of Play *might* have teased some ghostly samurai action (we'll get to that, maybe), but IGN South Africa's put something far more important on the table: a celebration of Queer voices in horror, featuring the awesome Nicole Maines and Michael Varrati!
Now, I know what you're thinking: "Jeff, what does this have to do with exploding goblins and loot drops?" Well, mate, it's simple. Gaming (and *bloody* scary gaming at that!) wouldn't be nearly as vibrant or interesting without the diverse voices that shape it. Horror, especially, often reflects our deepest anxieties and societal norms. So, celebrating queer perspectives in horror isn't just a 'nice thing to do,' it's crucial for pushing the genre (and the wider gaming landscape) forward.
The 25-minute-ish video (you can find it below if you're interested) is part of IGN's Pride 2025 celebrations. It features Maines and Varrati diving deep into the representation (or lack thereof) of queer characters in horror, the tropes they're subjected to (and how to subvert them!), and the power of horror to explore identity and belonging.
Honestly, this is the kind of content that reminds me why I love this industry. It's not just about shiny graphics and pre-order bonuses; it's about storytelling, community, and using games (and all media, really) as a platform for meaningful conversations. Sure, the State of Play *might* have shown off some fancy new titles, but this is the kind of content that sticks with you.
So, if you're looking for a bit of intellectual stimulation to go with your monster slaying, give this video a watch. You might just learn something, or, at the very least, you can check out IGN's Pride 2025 content. You might just find something awesome. I reckon, and that's fair dinkum!
