Hytale Modder Gets Doom Running Before the Game Even Launches

Modder tr7zw successfully got Doom running inside unreleased sandbox game Hytale, showcasing early community creativity ahead of the title's early access launch and CurseForge modding support.
The internet's favorite hardware challenge has struck again, and this time it predates the actual software release. As reported by IGN South Africa and originally highlighted by Rock Paper Shotgun, a clever modder named tr7zw has managed to get the 1993 classic Doom running entirely inside Hytale. The catch is that Hytale has not even officially launched yet, giving the sandbox title an unexpected spot on the endlessly expanding list of devices and virtual spaces that manage to run id Software's legendary shooter.
The implementation itself is wonderfully goofy and entirely functional. Players view Doom rendered on a blocky in-game monitor floating in the open world, running at a modest twenty frames per second with admittedly clunky controls. Nobody is booting up Hytale to experience the definitive way to play Doom, but that misses the point of a tradition where the journey of making it run anywhere is the entire reward. It also highlights the early strength of the community ecosystem, as modding platform CurseForge is already fully prepped to support the influx of player creations for the sandbox game.
This early modding feat arrives right as Hytale prepares for its early access launch. The project is already generating serious momentum, with developers noting that pre-release funding has successfully covered the next two years of development costs. Hypixel Studios founder Simon Collins-Laflamme recently advised fans to download the launcher early ahead of an expected opening day surge of over one million players. If this first viral mod is any indication, the player community is going to push the boundaries of this sandbox engine from day one.
