A comprehensive guide to navigating The Witcher 3's In the Eternal Fire's Shadow quest, tracking down hidden clues, defeating the Red Miasmal, and unlocking the Forgotten Wolf armor set.
Diving back into The Continent is always a good time, especially when you are hunting down gear tied to Netflix's adaptation of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The In the Eternal Fire's Shadow quest sends Geralt to the foreboding Devil's Pit in Velen to assist an Eternal Fire Deacon, ultimately rewarding players with the blueprints for the sleek Forgotten Wolf School armor set. Since you cannot return to loot the cave once the adventure wraps up, you will want to thoroughly sweep the area for hidden notes and clues left behind by a mysterious figure named Reinald before pushing forward.
Investigating the optional clues pays off in a big way by unlocking crucial dialogue paths and an alchemy recipe for Reinald's Philter. When you finally reach the bottom of the pit and use the Aard sign to free the trapped man, you will discover he is possessed by the dangerous Red Miasmal. Make sure Geralt drinks the philter himself rather than handing it over, then lean on Yrden and Aard to break his shield during the first phase before shifting gears to dodge the terrifying boss's ranged attacks and summoned minions in round two.
Your final decisions carry massive weight regarding the fate of the Deacon and whether you secure the good ending. Bringing the priest down to meet Reinald and choosing supportive dialogue options like defending the boy and arguing that you do not need a church to do good will guide the narrative toward a hopeful resolution where a hospital is founded in the pit. No matter which path you choose, the sweet reward of the Forgotten Wolf schematics is yours, giving you a fresh look for your next major playthrough.
