According to IGN South Africa, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie uses a clever multiverse explanation to introduce Star Fox, successfully laying the narrative groundwork for a future Super Smash Bros. film.
As reported by IGN South Africa, the rollout of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is finally upon us, and it brings a massive surprise for Nintendo fans. The film introduces Star Fox hero Fox McCloud into the Mushroom Kingdom fold. Instead of keeping the franchises strictly separated, the movie offers a direct in-universe explanation for his arrival. Midway through the story, Mario learns that Fox traveled through a wormhole from an entirely separate universe, separating him temporarily from his usual crew of Falco, Peppy, and Slippy.
Voiced by Glen Powell, Fox quickly steps into a central role as a roguish space pilot helping Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, and Yoshi take down Bowser Jr. By the time the credits roll, Fox mentions that heading back home is entirely possible through the same dimensional mechanics. This throwaway line does more than just justify a fun cameo. It establishes a hard sci-fi rule for Nintendo on the big screen, proving that cross-franchise travel is easy and accessible.
For players who grew up spending hundreds of hours in local multiplayer matches on past consoles, the implications are obvious. By establishing multiverse travel in a mainline Mario film, Nintendo and Illumination have effectively laid the groundwork for a massive Super Smash Bros. cinematic universe. When characters from completely different intellectual properties can just drop in through a wormhole, the door swings wide open for a feature film where any Nintendo character can appear. It is a smart narrative bridge that connects isolated franchises into a shared playground, giving streaming audiences and moviegoers plenty of crossover hype to look forward to in future phases.
