How Sega and Epic Found a Loophole to Bring Sonic to Fortnite Without Breaking His Code

Sonic Creative Officer Takashi Iizuka explained to IGN how Sega and Epic Games created an Android Sonic variant to bring the franchise to Fortnite without violating Sonic's strict rule against holding guns.
When Epic Games first approached Sega about bringing the iconic blue hedgehog to Fortnite, the collaboration hit a major roadblock regarding character integrity. Sonic Creative Officer Takashi Iizuka recently revealed in an interview with IGN that Sega immediately balked at the idea of the perpetually upbeat hero wielding firearms. While Sonic's edgier counterpart Shadow has a history with weaponry, Sonic himself has always strictly relied on speed and the power of the Chaos Emeralds to save the day rather than holding a gun.
To solve this creative dilemma, the development teams leaned into Sega's rich lore and engineered a brand new variant called Android Sonic. Modelled after classic robotic doppelgangers like Metal Sonic, this mechanical iteration provided a logical workaround that allowed the character to utilize Fortnite arsenal without compromising the core values of the original hero. The collaboration also required subtle physical adjustments, including longer legs to match the standardized hitbox proportions required for weapon handling across all Fortnite character models.
The resulting crossover expansion spans far beyond a single skin, bringing Sonic, Shadow, Tails, Knuckles, and Dr. Eggman into the battle royale alongside a dedicated Green Hill Zone POI. By finding a clever narrative and design loophole, Sega managed to expand its digital footprint into one of gaming's biggest social spaces while keeping its foundational mascot true to character.
