Brian VanHooker over at Polygon explores how Liam Neeson's 2019 black comedy thriller Cold Pursuit laid the groundwork for his upcoming role in the Naked Gun franchise by showcasing his deadpan humor.
When Hollywood announced a revival of the classic comedy franchise Naked Gun, plenty of classic film fans were skeptical. The original movies relied on a specific brand of rapid-fire slapstick and absurd deadpan delivery mastered by Leslie Nielsen and the ZAZ creative team. Recapturing that chaotic energy today felt like a long shot. Yet, the single piece of casting news that turned skeptics around was the choice of Liam Neeson to step into the lead role. That decision made total sense to anyone who caught his 2019 action-thriller, Cold Pursuit.
While marketing for Cold Pursuit initially framed it as just another gritty, generic revenge flick in the vein of Taken, the actual film turned out to be something entirely different. Directed by Hans Petter Moland, the movie plays out more like a deadpan black comedy in the style of Fargo than a standard action movie. Neeson plays a quiet snowplow driver who goes on a methodical rampage against a local crime syndicate after the tragic loss of his son. As the body count climbs, the movie leans into a bleak, wry sense of humor, featuring absurd gangster nicknames and dark running gags that highlight Neeson's underappreciated comedic timing.
For audiences who track how actors pivot between action blockbusters and meta-humor, Cold Pursuit serves as a masterclass in playing it straight while winking at the audience. That exact skill set is precisely why Neeson works so well in modern comedy revivals, proving he understands how to anchor ridiculous premises with absolute commitment. As streaming libraries shuffle titles and cross-platform viewers look for weekend movie pairings, checking out this snowy thriller offers a clear look at the comedic chops behind his upcoming franchise work.
