How a D&D Designer Built the Ultimate Party-Wrecking Monster

Polygon teamed up with D&D tactical expert Keith Ammann to design a custom monster that exploits a specific party's weaknesses for maximum tabletop chaos.
Running tabletop RPG combat encounters that challenge players without dragging into a boring grind is one of the toughest parts of being a Dungeon Master. To celebrate the release of the expanded guide Remonstered! The Monsters Know What They Are Doing, Polygon enlisted author Keith Ammann to craft a custom monster tailored to a specific party composition. Designed for a level five group featuring a Barbarian, Fighter, Bard, and Monk, the resulting creature had to exploit close-range melee strengths while factoring in low Intelligence stats across the board.
The resulting creation, dubbed the Mooncrow, is a terrifying avian monstrosity engineered for maximum psychological and tactical warfare. Set in a perpetual solar eclipse campaign world, these creatures hunt in flocks and rely on high Armor Class mechanics alongside illusion spells like Mirror Image and Phantasmal Force to sow absolute chaos. By keeping individual hit points low while maximizing evasive traits, the design avoids frustrating players with damage sponges while still delivering a punishing combat puzzle that forces heavy resource management.
Playtesting the encounter proved that smart monster design elevates the entire session from a routine stat check into a memorable social event. The party was pushed to their absolute limits, cycling through healing potions and burning spell slots while debating whether to risk a dangerous wilderness rest. It is a masterclass in tabletop encounter design that shows how understanding player psychology creates the kind of emergent stories that keep communities talking long after the session ends.
