Houston Rockets center Steven Adams joked that professional basketball performance will plummet in November due to the highly anticipated launch of Grand Theft Auto 6.
As the industry counts down the final weeks before Rockstar Games unleashes Grand Theft Auto 6 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, the cultural footprint of the upcoming release is already stretching far beyond traditional gaming circles. During a recent media day session, Houston Rockets center Steven Adams offered a humorous warning to the sports world. He predicted that professional basketball performance across the league will plummet this November as players and coaches retreat into Vice City instead of resting up for game nights.
While Adams delivered the remarks with a heavy dose of humor, the sentiment highlights just how dominant a cultural moment a mainline Grand Theft Auto release represents for modern entertainment. Pre-orders are already moving at a staggering pace, and hardware demand has pushed console sales higher with players securing upgraded systems specifically to ensure they can experience the game at peak visual fidelity on day one. Even businesses outside of tech and gaming, including automotive shops, are publicly bracing for productivity dips and staff requests for time off when November 19 finally arrives.
The timing of the release also aligns cleanly with broader cross-media strategies within the sports gaming ecosystem. Recent publisher disclosures from Take-Two Interactive point to an upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6 themed crossover arriving in NBA 2K27, bridging the gap between virtual hardwood and Rockstar's open world. Whether players are grinding battle passes on their phones and consoles or clearing their schedules for a week of uninterrupted exploration, the industry is bracing for a tectonic shift that will command the attention of the entire entertainment landscape this fall.
Game Rant originally reported on these athlete comments, contextualizing how the massive cultural anticipation for Rockstar's open-world sequel is bleeding into professional sports and everyday business operations ahead of the November launch.
