House of the Dragon star Steve Toussaint chats with Polygon about Corlys Velaryon's brutal season 3 arc, the reality of filming massive battles, and what lies ahead for the final season.
As House of the Dragon wraps up its massive third season, actor Steve Toussaint has been reflecting on the brutal realities of playing Corlys Velaryon. In a recent interview with Polygon, Toussaint discussed the Sea Snake's harrowing journey this season, from losing his fleet at the Battle of the Gullet to his kidnapping and subsequent involvement in the violent Battle of Tumbleton. For a character navigating the treacherous political waters of Westeros, survival is a daily concern. Toussaint admitted that he constantly worries about his character meeting a sudden end, especially given the show's reputation for high-stakes casualties.
The chaotic events of the season finale brought pivotal character dynamics to the forefront, particularly during the negotiations at Tumbleton. Toussaint shed light on Corlys's true motivations when trying to broker a peace deal between the opposing factions. Rather than showing sympathy for rival houses, Corlys is simply exhausted by endless warfare and the senseless loss of innocent lives. When facing off against Daemon Targaryen, his desperate plea to avoid a mountain of dead enemies reflects a veteran commander who recognizes the spiral of destruction before it reaches the point of no return.
Production scale for these pivotal moments matched the narrative intensity. The massive Battle of Tumbleton combined practical location shoots south of London with intricate indoor sets to capture the grit of the conflict. With the series now looking toward its fourth and final season, the stakes have never been higher for the remaining power players. You can read the full breakdown over at Polygon to see how the cast is preparing for the ultimate conclusion of the Targaryen civil war.
