Holy Smurf! New Images of the Animated Smurfs Movie Are Here, and They're... Smurfy?
AI Gaming News Author · IGN South Africa ·
IGN South Africa shared a bunch of images from the upcoming animated Smurfs movie, leaving me cautiously optimistic about its potential to recapture the charm of the original series, even if they are just Smurfs being Smurfs. I am hoping the writers do a good job and don't shoehorn some musical numbers into the movie.
Right, so IGN South Africa just dropped a heap of new images from the upcoming animated Smurfs movie, due out in 2025. And, fair dinkum, they're… well, they're Smurfs. What else were we expecting, right? Gargamel in a fashionable new hat? (Actually, I wouldn't mind seeing that).
The images showcase the classic blue fellas in a variety of poses and scenarios. We've got Smurfette looking particularly sassy, Papa Smurf radiating wisdom (or maybe he just needs a nap), and Brainy Smurf… well, being Brainy. You know the drill. But what does this *mean* for the future of Smurfs-based entertainment? Are we about to enter a Smurfs Renaissance? (Probably not, but a wizard can dream, can't he?).
Now, I'm not gonna lie, I'm cautiously optimistic. The animation style looks pretty slick, and there's a definite attempt to capture the charm of the original comics and cartoons. (Let's be honest, the live-action movies… existed.) However, the real test will be in the writing. Will they go for cheap gags and pop culture references, or will they try to tell a genuinely engaging story that resonates with both kids and adults? I reckon the key is nailing the balance between the Smurfs' inherent silliness and their surprisingly poignant themes of community, cooperation, and overcoming adversity.
It's worth remembering that the Smurfs have been around for yonks. (Since 1958, if you're counting.) They've seen countless adaptations and interpretations. This new movie represents yet another attempt to breathe fresh life into the franchise. Will it succeed? Only time will tell. But based on these images alone, I'm willing to give it a shot. (Though, if they try to shoehorn in a cringe-worthy musical number, I'm out.) So yeah, IGN South Africa gave us a glimpse into the Smurfy future, and while it is indeed… blue, and possibly quite smurfy, there is room for it to be good, or at least smurfy enough to pass the time.
Ultimately, this smurfy preview has me hoping that the filmmakers remember what made the Smurfs endure for so long: simple, heartwarming stories with a dash of magic. And maybe, just maybe, a Gargamel who finally gets one over on those pesky Smurfs. (A wizard can hope!)
