Holy Smokes! Pokémon Fan Gets Pope to Sign a Popplio Card, Proving God Has a Sense of Humor

A Pokémon fan met Pope Leo XIV and got him to sign a Popplio card because the names sound similar, resulting in a truly blessed and hilarious moment for the ages.
Right, so you know how sometimes the internet coughs up a story so bonkers you have to double-check you haven't accidentally wandered into an alternate dimension? Well, buckle up, because this one's a doozy. A Pokémon fan from Copenhagen, going by the handle ReptileCake (top marks for the name, mate!), managed to get Pope Leo XIV to sign a Popplio Pokémon card. I'm not kidding.
According to IGN, ReptileCake was part of a youth trip to the Vatican. Now, most folks probably bring a rosary or a heartfelt letter. Not our ReptileCake. He brought two Popplio cards, figuring the name was close enough to "Pope Leo" to warrant a giggle. And, bless his soul, it worked! (Or at least, the Pope was polite enough to pretend it did, which is basically the same thing, right?).
"I introduced it as Popplio because it sounds like Pope Leo," ReptileCake explained on Reddit. "He laughed, probably as a courtesy, but he did know about Pokémon cards, he even showed it around to the guards around him. Then I asked him to sign a copy for me and he was happy to oblige."
The Vatican even provided a photo to IGN, showing the Pope smiling. You can't make this stuff up. He blessed one of the cards and signed the other with a pen that was apparently on its last legs. Honestly, the half-working pen just adds to the chaotic charm of the whole affair.
ReptileCake isn't planning on selling the signed card, which is fair dinkum. "It's just a funny joke that his Holiness indulged in with me," he said. "That's worth more than any monetary value can satisfy."
Now, I know what you're thinking: "Jeff, why are you telling me this?" Well, two reasons. First, it's hilarious. Second, it's a reminder that sometimes, the best things in life are the unexpected, slightly absurd moments. And it proves that even the Pope knows a good meme when he sees one (or at least is willing to play along).
Who knows, maybe this is the start of a beautiful friendship between the Vatican and the Pokémon community. Maybe we'll see a new line of "Saintly Pokémon" cards. (Imagine a Blessed Blastoise – the possibilities are endless!). One thing's for sure, though: this story is a legendary catch for our times.
