Holy Kryptonite, Batman! Ranking the Caped Crusader's Competition (aka, Every Superman Ever)

IGN South Africa bravely ranked every Superman actor, and while there were some misses (sorry, Dean Cain!), Christopher Reeve remains the undisputed champion of truth, justice, and making us believe a man can fly.

Right, so IGN South Africa took on the Herculean task of ranking all the actors who've donned the cape and tights of Superman. And fair dinkum, it's a wild ride through the history of the Man of Steel, from the golden age of radio to the modern silver screen (and, you know, that one time on the CW). The big question, of course, is: Who nailed the whole 'truth, justice, and the American way' thing the best? (And does anyone *really* remember *Superman IV: The Quest for Peace* fondly? I'm betting not.)

First, let's acknowledge the fallen heroes – the Supermen who, let's just say, didn't quite reach escape velocity. Dean Cain in *Lois & Clark*? Bless his heart, but IGN reckon he was more interested in being a '90s heartthrob than the savior of Metropolis. George Reeves, the OG TV Superman, gets points for iconic status, but apparently his Clark Kent was a bit too...Superman-y. No real disguise there, mate.

Then there's the honorable mentions. Ben Affleck as George Reeves in *Hollywoodland*? Intriguing meta-casting, but not quite the real deal. Bud Collyer, the voice of Superman for *decades* in radio and cartoons, gets a huge shoutout for shaping the character's vocal identity. He's the foundation all the others are built on.

Brandon Routh in *Superman Returns* is a nostalgic callback to Christopher Reeve, almost to a fault. He had the look, but the movie itself was a bit… stretched. Tom Welling in *Smallville* spent ten years teasing the costume change – the longest origin story *ever*. But hey, points for commitment and a killer Lex Luthor. (Michael Rosenbaum, you legend!)

Henry Cavill's Superman is… divisive, isn't he? He *looked* the part, but the dour tone of the Snyderverse didn't exactly scream "hope." Kirk Alyn, the first live-action movie Superman, gets props for enthusiasm and nailing the Clark Kent/Superman vocal transformation. Underrated, says IGN, and I'm inclined to agree.

Now, we're getting to the heavy hitters. David Corenswet, the new Superman in James Gunn's upcoming flick, is already showing promise. Early glimpses suggest a fast-talking, "aw, shucks" kind of guy with a heart of gold (and he's a dog person!).

Tyler Hoechlin in *Superman & Lois* really shines, according to IGN. The show focuses on family and Smallville life, giving us a more grounded and relatable Man of Steel, who is learning to be a father. A nice modern update, apparently.

But, of course, there can be only one (or, well, one at the top of this list). Christopher Reeve. The definitive Superman. The gold standard. He balanced the bumbling Clark Kent with the confident Superman perfectly. The warmth, the vulnerability, the sheer *belief* he inspired… Reeve *was* Superman. End of story.
