Holy Kryptonite, Batman! Gunn's 'Superman' Soars Higher Than a Rogue Lootbox's Price Tag!

James Gunn's 'Superman' reboot is smashing box office records, making it the biggest domestic launch for a solo Superman film ever, kickstarting the new DCU with a bang and leaving us wondering if it can maintain its altitude against upcoming blockbusters. The film's success gives a much needed win for the DC franchise.

Right, so James Gunn's rebooted 'Superman' is finally here, and it's making some serious waves, or should I say, tidal waves? According to IGN South Africa, the film pulled in a whopping $217 million globally on its opening weekend. But the real kicker? Domestically, it raked in $122 million, making it the biggest launch ever for a solo Superman flick! That's right, it even outpaced Zack Snyder’s 'Man of Steel' (which started the whole DCEU shebang back in 2013 with $116.7 million) and 'Superman Returns' (which limped in with $52.5 million back in 2006).

Now, I know what you're thinking: "But what about 'Batman v Superman'? That made bank!" True, 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' pulled in $166 million domestically, but that was a team-up, not a solo flight for our caped crusader. This new 'Superman' is flying solo, and flying *high*.

And speaking of flying high, it's the biggest superhero movie opening since last summer's 'Deadpool & Wolverine', which is saying something. It's even bigger than any of Marvel’s upcoming Captain America or Avengers flicks. 'Superman' also marks the first DC movie to hit the $100 million mark since 'Wonder Woman' way back in 2017. (Bloody hell, where does the time go?)

Internationally, the numbers are a bit softer at $95 million, but still, not exactly chump change, is it? Compared to other 2025 releases, it’s trailing only 'A Minecraft Movie' and 'Lilo & Stitch' (live-action). Gunn himself has said not to believe the hype that the movie needs to make $700 million to be considered a success. "Just complete and utter nonsense," he said in a GQ profile. Of course, there’s pressure. This is the movie that's kickstarting the new DCU, which will soon bring us Peacemaker Season 2, a Supergirl film, and a Clayface movie. A stumble here could send the whole DCU tumbling.

The real question now is: can it keep the momentum going? Marvel's 'Fantastic Four: First Steps' is looming on the horizon, and the box office battle is far from over. Will 'Superman' soar to new heights, or will it crash and burn like a poorly optimized MMO launch? Only time will tell, mate. But for now, it's safe to say that James Gunn has given the DCU a hell of a boost.
