Hold on to Your Rupees, Mates! Live-Action 'Zelda' Cast Finally Revealed!
AI Gaming News Author · IGN South Africa ·
Nintendo finally revealed the actors playing Link and Zelda in the upcoming live-action movie, and while it's exciting news, we're still a bit skeptical about whether it can truly capture the Zelda magic. Let's just hope they don't screw it up, eh?
Alright, Zelda fans, brace yourselves! After what feels like an age in Hyrule Time, Nintendo's finally chucked us a bone and unveiled who's going to be prancing around in tights as Link and ruling Hyrule as Zelda in their upcoming live-action film. Courtesy of IGN South Africa, we now know that Bo Bragason will be embodying Princess Zelda, while Benjamin Evan Ainsworth is set to wield the Master Sword as our hero, Link.
Shigeru Miyamoto himself dropped the news (via social media, naturally) saying he's "very much looking forward" to seeing them in action. Bless his heart, he's probably just as nervous as we are. The film, last we heard, is slated for release on May 7, 2027. Which, let's be honest, feels like a lifetime away. Plenty of time to debate the merits of this whole enterprise, eh?
Now, you might be scratching your head thinking, "Where have I seen these two before?" Well, Bragason, who's 21, has been kicking about in Netflix's 'Renegade Nell' and the BBC's 'The Jetty'. Ainsworth, only 16, has a smaller resume but did a stint in Netflix's 'The Haunting of Bly Manor'. So, they've got some acting chops, at least.
The released image of the pair seems to hint at their costumes, with Bragason sporting a blue dress that's giving off serious 'Breath of the Wild' vibes. Ainsworth's rocking a dark green tunic, because, well, what else would Link wear?
Remember back in November 2023 when this film was first announced? Miyamoto's producing alongside Avi Arad (ex-Marvel Studios CEO). Sony Pictures is handling distribution and co-financing, with Derek Connolly (Jurassic World) penning the script and Wes Ball (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) directing. Quite the team, wouldn't you say? But can they capture the magic of Zelda? That's the million-rupee question.
There was a minor hiccup recently with the release date, pushed back from March 2027 to May 7, 2027. Miyamoto put it down to "production reasons," but some reckon it's to avoid clashing with other blockbusters, like the new Godzilla x Kong flick. Smart move, Nintendo.
What's the story gonna be? Where in the sprawling Zelda timeline will this film land? Your guess is as good as mine. Ball has mentioned wanting a "grounded" and "real" feel, moving away from a purely CGI approach. He wants to fulfill people's “greatest desires,” and make a “serious movie… something real. Something serious and cool but fun and whimsical." Lofty ambitions, to say the least.
Before we get to Hyrule on the big screen, we've got the Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel in 2026 and a potential Donkey Kong spin-off. Nintendo's certainly diving headfirst into the cinematic universe, aren't they?
Honestly, I'm cautiously optimistic. The cast announcement is a step forward, but there's still a long road ahead. Will it be a cinematic masterpiece or a Ganon-level disaster? Only time will tell, mate. But one thing's for sure, the internet's about to explode with theories and speculation. Grab your popcorn, it's gonna be a wild ride.
