Former Darkwood developers have announced Hoarder, a cleaning simulator that hides a deep psychological horror game beneath its surface, drawing comparisons to Inscryption.
Developer Byzel and publisher Awaken Realms have announced Hoarder, an upcoming title led by Acid Wizard co-founder Gustaw Stachaszewski alongside veterans from Superhot and the creators of YouTube horror series Smile Guide. As reported by Edwin Evans-Thirlwell over at Rock Paper Shotgun, the game initially presents itself as an atmospheric cleaning simulator in the vein of PowerWash Simulator, tasking players with decluttering the chaotic home of a hoarder couple while fielding phone calls from an irate employer named Darek. The visual design shines with detailed clutter, nostalgic colors, and grimy textures, offering a genuinely satisfying gameplay loop for anyone who loves organizing virtual spaces.
However, the cleaning simulation is merely a facade for a much darker and more unpredictable experience. Players can choose to simply earn enough cash from selling found items to buy a dream vacation and end the game normally, or they can investigate strange anomalies hidden within the house. Uncovering a mysterious staircase leads players into an entirely different genre of game where established rules break down, quest markers become corrupted, and the familiar mechanics twist into something deeply unsettling. Much like Inscryption, the title uses a comforting and familiar gameplay loop as a Trojan horse to smuggle in a psychological mystery.
While Awaken Realms has not yet announced a concrete release date on Steam, the pedigree behind the project makes it one of the most intriguing indie releases on the horizon. The cleaning loop is not discarded once the darker elements take over, but rather serves as a way to fuel the unfolding narrative beneath. It is a bold approach to genre-blending that rewards player curiosity, turning what looks like a cozy Saturday morning chore simulator into a portal for genuine discovery.
