Hinterland Studio is shifting development focus back to the original survival mode with new updates and DLC, while its upcoming sequel Blackfrost takes a temporary backseat.
Hinterland Studio is shaking up its development priorities for its flagship survival franchise. According to a recent studio update reported by Rock Paper Shotgun, the team is shifting its primary focus back to the original game and its dedicated survival mode, even though the sequel, Blackfrost, is still actively in development.
Hinterland pointed to a shifting industry landscape over the last few years as the driving force behind the pivot. With player habits leaning heavily into comfort games and familiar titles, the studio plans to roll out two years of updates for the original game. This roadmap includes quality-of-life improvements, new maps, items ported from the final episode of Wintermute, and upcoming paid expansions.
The good news is that Blackfrost has not been cancelled, and the studio avoided layoffs during this internal reshuffle. While some developers have moved off the sequel to support the original game's ongoing content, Hinterland has promised a gameplay reveal for Blackfrost before the end of the year to keep the community in the loop.
