Highguard In-Progress Review: Strong Gunplay Meets a Load-Bearing Raid Mode

An in-progress review of Highguard from IGN South Africa highlights the game's stellar gunplay and innovative Raid Mode, while noting that its heavy reliance on a single core mode leaves room for growth.
When Wildlight Entertainment first revealed Highguard, it was easy to write it off as just another contender in a crowded hero shooter market. According to an in-progress review by Travis Northup on IGN South Africa, the game has managed to turn heads after two weeks of live matches thanks to polished mechanics and a clever identity. The title blends familiar hero abilities and simplified battle royale looting with a standout multiplayer offering called Raid Mode. In this signature mode, two teams of three or five players battle to invade and destroy each other's home bases in structured, chaotic sieges inspired by base raiding in survival games like Rust.
The core match structure is divided into distinct phases that keep everyone focused on a singular objective. Players start with a defensive phase to reinforce their base, move into an exploration and looting phase to grab better gear, and then fight over the spawn of a weapon called the Shieldbreaker during the Intercept phase. Once a team claims that weapon and carries it to the enemy fortress, the match shifts into the high-stakes Raid phase where defenders must repel invaders trying to blow up their generators. These multi-phase skirmishes can last anywhere from eight to thirty minutes depending on how aggressive the competition gets.
While the underlying gunplay is sharp and the unique game mode provides a breath of fresh air for competitive shooters, the experience currently relies heavily on that single standout mode. Reviewers note that the lone mode can occasionally feel like a rough draft and has started to show signs of repetition after prolonged play. Fortunately, the development team has been quick to push out changes and updates since launch, leaving players hopeful that the game will continue to evolve and hold its ground in the busy multiplayer space.
