Hideki Kamiya Tells Xbox Leadership He Is Still Ready to Revive Scalebound

Veteran game director Hideki Kamiya has publicly stated he is ready to revive the canceled Xbox project Scalebound if leadership gives the green light. Despite his new studio working on Okami 2, Kamiya remains hopeful about finishing the action RPG.

Action game veteran Hideki Kamiya is once again making it clear that he wants to finish Scalebound. In a recent interview with Video Games Chronicle, the former PlatinumGames director addressed Xbox leadership directly, stating that he is ready to get to work if the platform holder decides to revive the canceled dragon action RPG. Scalebound was first revealed at E3 in 2014 as an Xbox One exclusive before Microsoft officially pulled the plug in 2017. Despite the years that have passed, Kamiya and members of his newly formed studio, Clovers, remain open to the idea of bringing the project back to life.

Kamiya noted that he recently had dinner with several former developers from the original Scalebound team, and the conversation naturally gravitated toward the unfinished game. While Clovers is currently busy developing Okami 2 following Kamiya's departure from PlatinumGames, he remains hopeful that the right opportunity will present itself. He pointed to the return of Okami as proof that persistent creative ambitions can eventually find a path forward, even after long delays in the industry.

Whether Xbox will entertain the pitch is another question entirely. The gaming giant has experienced massive internal shifts recently, including new leadership under Asha Sharma, alongside major studio closures, layoffs, and new digital preservation initiatives. For now, Scalebound remains a ghost of the past, but Kamiya's public willingness to step back into the director chair keeps the dream alive for fans who have spent the last decade wondering what could have been.
