Hideki Kamiya Leaves the Door Open for a Scalebound Revival Under New Xbox Leadership

Veteran director Hideki Kamiya is open to pitching the canceled Xbox exclusive Scalebound to new CEO Asha Sharma, though logistical hurdles and corporate shifts remain.

The long dormant dream of Scalebound might not be entirely dead yet. In a recent interview with Video Games Chronicle, veteran game director Hideki Kamiya shared that he is entirely open to pitching the canceled action RPG to new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma. Originally revealed back at E3 2014, the ambitious PlatinumGames project centered on a hero named Drew and his dragon companion Thuban before its cancellation shook the industry in January 2017. While Microsoft still holds the intellectual property rights, Kamiya noted that if Xbox wants to make it happen, he is willing to sit down and discuss bringing the dragon riding adventure back to life.

Reviving the project would face some logistical hurdles today. Kamiya departed PlatinumGames to join Clovers in 2023, and while a couple of the original Scalebound developers are currently at his new studio, others have moved on to Capcom. Even so, Kamiya remains optimistic, pointing to the upcoming Okami sequel as proof that intense community desire can eventually push publishers to resurrect beloved franchises. Whether modern players would still rally around a revived Draconis is another question, but the appetite for lost classics remains a powerful force in contemporary gaming circles.

This potential pitch arrives during a major transition period for Xbox under Sharma, who stepped into the role earlier this year following Phil Spencer's departure. Sharma's tenure has seen a partial shift back toward first party console exclusivity alongside a turbulent period marked by studio restructuring and widespread layoffs. For a player base that closely tracks corporate shifts and platform strategies, a Scalebound revival would mark a fascinating twist in Microsoft's ongoing ecosystem evolution. For now, Kamiya and the team at Clovers are focused on the Okami sequel, leaving fans to wonder if the scales will ever tip in favor of a Scalebound return.
