Hellraiser: Revival Developers Call Adult Game Crackdown Ridiculous for the Medium

The developers of Clive Barker's Hellraiser: Revival believe their game will survive current industry crackdowns on adult content thanks to its established IP status, despite ongoing regional censorship and storefront hurdles.
Recent pressure from payment processors and advocacy groups has created a volatile climate for developers creating games with adult or sexual content. Major storefronts like Steam and Itch.io have found themselves caught in the crossfire, leading to sudden bans and inconsistent moderation that leaves creators guessing whether their work will see the light of day. While some titles have managed to overturn bans through loud public campaigns, the chilling effect on independent developers remains a constant industry concern.
Despite this uncertain landscape, the team behind Clive Barker's Hellraiser: Revival is confident their upcoming horror title will survive the scrutiny. Speaking with Rock Paper Shotgun, narrative director Antony de Fault and game director Emil Esov noted that the game's heavy focus on fetish culture and explicit imagery did not prompt any self-censorship during development. The developers admitted that while the broader industry climate spooked them initially, the established history and recognition of the Hellraiser intellectual property acts as a vital shield against sudden storefront rejections.
Even with Steam welcoming the game in October, regional age ratings and local classification boards still present major hurdles for boundary-pushing horror. Saber Interactive is currently navigating certification roadblocks in Germany and skipping submission in Japan altogether, echoing similar recent struggles faced by other mature franchises like Halloween. Ultimately, the team maintained that compromising on the series signature themes of pain, pleasure, and transgressive horror would have defeated the entire purpose of building a faithful adaptation.
