HBO and Hasbro are developing a Baldur's Gate series run by The Last of Us co-creator Craig Mazin, which will tell a brand new story continuing directly after the events of Baldur's Gate 3.
The transition from interactive RPGs to prestige television continues to accelerate. As reported by Polygon via Deadline, HBO and Hasbro Entertainment are officially teaming up for a Baldur's Gate television series. Craig Mazin, best known for his work on Chernobyl and HBO's adaptation of The Last of Us, will serve as co-creator, writer, executive producer, and showrunner. Rather than retelling the massive narrative of Larian Studios' award-winning game, the series will pick up directly where Baldur's Gate 3 left off.
For players who poured hundreds of hours into the sprawling CRPG, this approach brings both exciting creative potential and some inevitable headaches. Because Larian has confirmed that a fourth installment is not currently in development, Mazin and his team have a rare degree of creative freedom to forge new narrative ground. At the same time, the show will have to canonize one specific ending from a game famous for its branching choices and player agency. Former Dungeons & Dragons head of creative Chris Perkins is attached as a set consultant to help maintain lore integrity, but bridging the gap between millions of unique player playthroughs and a single television canon will be a monumental task.
Mazin brings serious pedigree to the project alongside a genuine personal connection to the source material, noting in a statement that he has logged nearly one thousand hours in Larian's digital realm. The series will mix familiar faces with entirely new characters, though casting details remain tightly under wraps. As streaming platforms increasingly look to deep gaming franchises to anchor their slates, this project represents a major test of how well massive choice-driven universes translate to linear formats without alienating the community that made them cultural phenomena in the first place.
