Halo: Campaign Evolved PC Mod Restores Local Split-Screen That Developers Left Hidden

A new PC mod for Halo: Campaign Evolved unlocks local split-screen co-op that developers left disabled in the game files, though it comes with a few technical limitations.

Halo: Campaign Evolved is out now across platforms, but PC players noticed a frustrating omission right out of the gate. While console players on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S can enjoy local split-screen co-op, the PC version ships without native support for sharing a screen with a friend on the couch. Traditional online co-op remains available, but the decision to leave local play off the PC build felt like a step backward for a franchise built on social multiplayer roots. Fortunately, the modding community has stepped in to fix what the developers left out.

A new mod available on Nexus Mods, originally highlighted by PC Gamer, brings local split-screen back to the PC version of the game. According to the mod creator, the actual code and user interface elements for split-screen are already sitting inside the PC game files, meaning Halo Studios simply disabled the feature before launch. Instead of hacking the main executable file, the mod uses UE4SS at runtime to inject a second local player and bypass the blocks preventing the feature from running.

While the fix works, it does come with a few caveats that show why official support is usually preferred. The mod currently limits sessions to two players instead of the four-player split-screen supported on consoles, and it has only been tested on the Steam version rather than the Microsoft Store release. Players also need to use controllers and input a hotkey to get things running, alongside visual quirks like subtitles stretching across both viewports. Still, for PC players wanting to share a screen, this community fix proves that the capability was there all along. Original reporting comes via Sherif Saed at Eurogamer.
