Bungie co-founder Jason Jones and former narrative director Margaret Stohl have launched Stone Kite, a new studio focusing on simultaneous multi-medium franchise building rather than traditional game development.
Bungie veteran and industry fixture Jason Jones has teamed up with former Destiny 2 narrative director Margaret Stohl to launch a brand new creative venture called Stone Kite. Following his departure from Bungie earlier this year during a turbulent period of layoffs and restructuring, Jones is stepping away from traditional game development for his initial project. Alongside Stohl, who also brings extensive experience from Marvel and prose writing, Jones is building an enterprise that aims to bypass traditional media silos through what the team calls fractal storytelling.
Rather than building a hit game and adapting it into movies or books later, Stone Kite is launching its debut universe across multiple entertainment mediums simultaneously. The studio's first project is titled One Zero One, originating from a manuscript written by Jones. The narrative focuses on humanity facing extinction against AI controlled robotic soldiers, and it is kicking off with an 80 page graphic novel rather than a playable build. The broader creative collective includes more than 250 contributors from major entertainment companies spanning film, comics, and gaming.
While games are not the immediate focus of this first release, the studio has left the door open for interactive projects down the line as the universe expands into audio, prose, and screen formats. For players who grew up tracing the lineages of Marathon, Halo, and Destiny, this marks a fascinating pivot. It remains to be seen whether Jones will eventually return to interactive software under the Stone Kite banner, but this multidisciplinary approach offers an intriguing new model for modern franchise building.
