Guillermo del Toro Confirms He Tried to Direct a BioShock Movie, But Calls Ended the Project

Guillermo del Toro confirmed he once attempted to direct a BioShock movie adaptation, but the project collapsed after a disastrous phone call with studio executives.

Acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro recently confirmed long-standing rumors that he was involved in early concepts for a BioShock film adaptation. Speaking in an interview with IGN, del Toro revealed that the project was abruptly scrapped following what he described as a contentious and disastrous phone call regarding the creative direction. While he is famously a massive fan of the underwater dystopia, the experience convinced him to step away from adapting games for the screen entirely.

del Toro noted that the fundamental storytelling mechanics of interactive media and cinema are completely different. Rather than translating puzzles and sandbox progression into a linear format, creators face major structural hurdles. His frustration with those early production talks left a lasting impression, putting a definitive end to any hopes of seeing his take on Rapture.

The filmmaker also reflected on his past interactive projects, including his canceled horror trilogy Insane and his collaboration with Hojima on the legendary playable teaser P.T. Given his history with cancelled gaming ventures and difficult studio dynamics, del Toro made it clear that he has no interest in developing or directing video games in the future.
