Guild Wars Is Getting Its First Collectible Card Game With Mistbound

ArenaNet has announced Mistbound: Guild Wars Card Game, a free to play digital card game coming to PC and mobile. Developed by NC and published by bilibili, the game introduces grid based movement and tactical positioning to the long running MMO universe.

Following the major reveal of Guild Wars 3 earlier this month, ArenaNet is expanding its iconic MMO franchise into a completely new genre. Mistbound: Guild Wars Card Game was just announced, bringing the universe to PC and mobile platforms as a free to play title. While ArenaNet owns the intellectual property, development is being handled by Korean studio NC, with publishing duties managed by bilibili. This collaboration brings a fresh spin to the digital card game space, particularly because the franchise has surprisingly never ventured into collectible card games before now.

Mistbound looks to shake up traditional card battler mechanics by introducing spatial movement to matches. Battles take place on a five by three grid where players select a commander and deploy cards. The system allows players to move cards in multiple directions during a turn, introducing tactical elements like flanking, positional changes, and knockbacks that feel closer to traditional action combat. Selectable commanders draw inspiration from Guild Wars 2 Professions, complete with unique passive traits and active abilities. Fans of the MMO will also appreciate the return of familiar characters, alongside original music from franchise composers and full voice acting.

Questions naturally remain around monetization, which can easily make or break the community longevity of any digital card game. ArenaNet recently eased fan concerns for Guild Wars 3 by ruling out pay to win microtransactions and mandatory subscriptions right out of the gate, but the studio has not yet detailed how Mistbound will handle card acquisition and packs. As reported by Eurogamer, the title does not have a release date yet, but cross platform players can keep an eye on the official website for updates as development continues.
