An ambitious project to port Grand Theft Auto 5 to the Nintendo Switch has been cancelled after the modder behind it taunted Rockstar Games and subsequently received a legal cease and desist letter.
A high profile attempt to bring Grand Theft Auto 5 to the Nintendo Switch has come to an abrupt halt. As reported by Polygon, a modder known as M0jso gained significant traction online after sharing footage of the open world epic running at a surprisingly stable 30 frames per second on portable hardware. The impressive technical feat quickly sparked widespread excitement across social media and creator communities, where players marvelled at the prospect of experiencing Los Santos on Nintendo systems.
Confidence soon turned into overconfidence as the project gained momentum. Following recent updates from Rockstar Games regarding unauthorized platform ports and intellectual property rules, M0jso publicly taunted the developer on X. The modder dismissed potential legal consequences by pointing to their location in Serbia and even shrugged off initial warnings about Take Two Interactive and their notoriously aggressive legal team.
Reality set in rapidly once official enforcement began. After a dedicated Discord server was taken down for copyright infringement, M0jso received a formal cease and desist letter and promptly cancelled the entire project. Facing the reality of corporate legal action, the modder admitted on social media that they had gotten too cocky and had severely underestimated how quickly publishers would protect their assets.
For the wider community, the situation serves as another reminder of the friction between passionate modding scenes and strict corporate compliance. While technical ingenuity on portable devices continues to push boundaries, challenging major publishers openly on social media rarely ends well for independent creators.
