Rockstar is offering free current-gen upgrades for GTA 5 on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S to owners of the PS4 and digital Xbox One versions starting June 18, alongside an upcoming GTA Online content update.
Rockstar is finally removing the upgrade paywall for Grand Theft Auto V. Starting tomorrow, June 18, players who already own a digital copy on Xbox One or any version on PlayStation 4 can upgrade to the current-gen PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions completely free of charge. This long overdue move is a welcome shift for the community, especially since many players have been hesitant to purchase the game a third or fourth time just to get better performance and visual fidelity.
For active players, the timing is hard to ignore. Alongside the free upgrade rollout, Rockstar has confirmed that the next major content update for GTA Online is dropping in just a few weeks. That means anyone jumping over to current-gen hardware right now will have their garages, businesses, and character progression intact just in time for the fresh drop of multiplayer content.
While long-term fans might wonder why this transition took so long given how many hardware generations this title has spanned, getting native performance, faster load times, and improved visuals without opening your wallet is a solid win. It keeps the massive multiplayer ecosystem healthy and ensures the community stays unified on modern hardware as we look ahead to what is next for the franchise.
