Grandft Theft Auto 6 Will Punish Players for Waving Guns Around Thanks to Smarter NPCs

Rockstar Games has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 will feature hyper-reactive NPCs and restricted weapon inventories, forcing players to be much more careful about carrying firearms in public.

Rockstar Games is dialing up the realism in Grand Theft Auto 6 by giving non-player characters a much sharper sense of self-preservation. In a recent interview with creator TGG, Rockstar North boss Rob Nelson explained that the days of casually strolling down the street with a shotgun without drawing a glance are officially over. Unlike Grand Theft Auto 5, where crowds barely batted an eye until you aimed directly at them, the citizens of Leonida will panic the moment you hold a firearm in your hands.

The game is also borrowing design philosophies from Red Dead Redemption 2 by doing away with bottomless inventory pockets. Players will be limited to two concealed weapons on their person at all times. If you want to haul heavier hardware, you will need to utilize vehicle trunks or safehouse lockers. Nelson also noted that slung long guns will draw different, more cautious reactions compared to actively brandishing a weapon, adding a layer of tactical planning to how you move through the open world.

Beyond firearms, the simulation systems extend into daily survival mechanics. Players will need to monitor vehicle fuel, manage character diet and weight, and maintain relationships with in-game partners. Rockstar even toyed with mandatory grocery shopping before scaling it back to an optional mechanic to keep the pacing smooth. These interconnected systems point toward a living, breathing world where careless actions carry immediate weight with both citizens and the newly overhauled police force.

This shift toward behavioral sophistication means players will need to trade pure chaos for a bit more situational awareness when the game launches. It is a bold design choice that bridges the gap between arcade sandbox freedom and immersive sim realism. As excitement continues to build toward release day, keeping your iron tucked away might just save you a lot of trouble on the streets of Leonida.
