Players still holding onto their last-gen copies of Grand Theft Auto V are finally getting a long-awaited break. According to a report from IGN South Africa, anyone with a digital copy on Xbox One or any version on PlayStation 4 can upgrade to the current-gen console editions for free starting tomorrow, June 18. This shift brings the definitive console version of Los Santos to a much wider player base without requiring another full purchase, smoothing out the transition as the community looks toward the future of the franchise.
For a game that has spanned three console generations, this move is a welcome relief for players who held off on repurchasing the title for newer hardware. Beyond the technical bump, Rockstar is also keeping the ecosystem active with a fresh batch of content. GTA Online is receiving its next major update in just a few weeks, ensuring that the massive multiplayer economy remains a primary social hub for millions of active players across platforms.
While the industry often charges full price for cross-generation remasters and re-releases, this update gives the massive community a reason to jump back in without friction. Head over to IGN South Africa to catch the full video breakdown and get all the details on how to claim your upgrade before the rollout begins.
