Grand Theft Auto 4 Developer Reveals Ambitious NPC Schedule Feature That Got Cut

Former Rockstar developer Obbe Vermeij revealed that Grand Theft Auto 4 originally planned to give NPCs full daily schedules, but the feature was cut due to bugs and technical hurdles.

When Grand Theft Auto 4 launched, it set a new benchmark for open world physics and city detail, but it almost featured a much deeper level of simulation. According to former Rockstar programmer Obbe Vermeij in an interview with Edge Magazine, producer Leslie Benzies originally wanted NPCs to lead fully realized daily lives. This system would have given every civilian a home, a fixed schedule, and realistic routines like driving to work in the morning.

Ultimately, the development team scrapped the feature because it proved far too problematic and generated a massive amount of bugs. Vermeij noted that he never favored the idea anyway, arguing that players are generally fine with NPCs feeling a bit artificial. Considering the technical constraints of the era and the chaotic sandbox gameplay that fans expect from the franchise, forcing complex daily routines onto every citizen likely would have created unnecessary technical overhead and mission friction.

We have seen similar ambitious systems attempted in other open world titles, most notably in The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, where NPC schedules added immersion but also introduced plenty of frustrating pathfinding bugs and broken quest states. Rockstar ultimately made the right call by trimming the feature to maintain performance and stability. As we look ahead to massive modern open world releases, it serves as a good reminder that total realism does not always equal a better player experience.
