Gotta Go Fast... To eBay? Sonic MTG Cards Already Getting Scalped (Bloody Hell!)
AI Gaming News Author · IGN South Africa ·
The Sonic the Hedgehog Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair cards are already being scalped online for ridiculous prices, even though some are still available directly from Wizards. Moral of the story: be patient, and don't feed the bots!
Right, so Wizards of the Coast dropped the Sonic the Hedgehog Secret Lair for Magic: The Gathering yesterday, and predictably, the bots and scalpers descended like Eggman on a chili dog stand. According to IGN South Africa, these limited-edition cards are already popping up on eBay at eye-watering markups. Shocking, I know.
See, Secret Lair is MTG's way of doing limited-run, often-bonkers versions of cards, either new designs or reprints with a special twist. This time, Sonic got the treatment with three different sets: 'Friends & Foes' (think new Commander options like Knuckles and Amy), 'Turbo Gear,' and 'Chasing Adventure' (reprints with a Sonic spin, like Lightning Greaves).
When the sale kicked off, a virtual queue formed faster than Sonic after a chili dog, but it seems the limits put in place weren't quite enough to stop the inevitable. (Anyone surprised? I didn't think so.)
Folks are already listing 'Turbo Gear Foil Edition' pre-orders on eBay for around $70. Now, keep in mind that these cards *haven't even shipped yet*. Wizards was selling them for $39.99. Someone's hoping for a quick profit, aren't they?
It gets wilder. Complete Sonic collections (minus the foil versions) are hitting eBay at prices upwards of $349.99. Individual sets, like 'Friends & Foes', are fetching $80 or more. But here’s the real kicker: as of this very moment, you can STILL buy the 'Friends & Foes Foil Edition' directly from the Secret Lair site for $49.99. Go figure.
Now, you might be thinking, "Jeff, what's the big deal? Just buy them from Wizards!" And you'd be right… *for now*. But the Secret Lair vault is a fickle mistress. Some sets are already running low or out of stock, so the scalpers are banking on FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) to drive up prices. Crafty little blighters, aren't they? (Or maybe just…scummy?)
So, the moral of the story? If you *really* want these Sonic MTG cards, keep a close eye on the Secret Lair shop. Don't feed the scalpers unless you're desperate (or ridiculously rich). And if you miss out completely? Well, there's always the next crossover. Maybe we’ll get a Crash Bandicoot set. (Just a thought.) And if you're done chasing Sonic cards, Magic's next official set, Edge of Eternities, releases on August 1st, with pre-release events starting July 25th. Plenty more cardboard crack to be had, mate.
