GOG Faces Community Backlash After Defending Generative AI Use in Marketing Art

GOG is facing community scrutiny after using generative AI for promotional artwork and declining to rule out future use, clashing with the platform's pro-preservation ethos.

PC storefront GOG is finding itself on the defensive after a recent promotional banner for a digital sale was revealed to be generated by artificial intelligence. The artwork sparked immediate pushback from community members and internal talent alike, forcing leadership to address the controversy during a recent Reddit Ask Me Anything session. Managing director Maciej Golbiewski declined to rule out future generative AI use, stating that the company tests various technologies when they help push the platform forward, though he acknowledged that the store needs to exercise better human judgment regarding where and how these tools are deployed.

The response did little to ease concerns among players and creators, especially given GOG's historical standing as a champion for digital preservation and consumer-friendly policies. While the platform has previously pointed to potential technical applications for machine learning, such as helping older code run on modern hardware or assisting with game preservation, leaning on AI for promotional artwork hits a raw nerve. For a community that deeply values human artistry and the craft behind the games, using generative tools for marketing feels entirely counter to the ethos of supporting developers.

As digital storefronts and game creators navigate the messy integration of new technologies, transparency remains the key battleground. Players across PC, console, and cloud ecosystems are increasingly vocal about protecting human talent from being sidelined by automated shortcuts. GOG has built its reputation on respecting players and preserving gaming history, and retaining that trust will require a much clearer line on where innovation ends and creative displacement begins.
