Ghost of Yōtei Gets a Gold-Plated PS5 (Literally!) and... Sumi-e? Fair Dinkum, Sony?

Sony's going full art gallery with limited-edition Ghost of Yōtei PS5 bundles inspired by kintsugi and sumi-e, aiming to capture the game's themes of healing and struggle... all while we just wanna play the bloody thing.

Right, so Sony and Sucker Punch have just dropped a whole heap of new info on Ghost of Yōtei, including some seriously swanky limited-edition PS5 bundles. And when I say "swanky," I mean they're taking design cues from *actual* traditional Japanese art. Colour me intrigued!

According to Eurogamer (cheers, mates! Original article linked below), there are two versions on the way: a Gold Limited Edition and a Black Limited Edition. Now, the gold one is proper bonkers. It's got gold detailing all over it, inspired by *kintsugi*. Kintsugi, for those not in the know (and let's be honest, that's probably most of us!), is the art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer mixed with gold. Sony reckons it mirrors the main character Atsu's journey of healing and resilience. Bit deep for a console, innit? But hey, I'm not complaining if it looks good.

Then there's the Black Limited Edition. This one's channeling *Sumi-e*, which is basically Japanese ink wash painting. Think bold black brushstrokes depicting the landscapes of Ezo (where the game's set). Apparently, it's meant to represent Atsu's internal struggles. So, gold for healing, black for struggling. Got it.

Both bundles come with a matching DualSense controller, sporting a silhouette of Atsu on the touchpad. Sucker Punch's creative director Jason Connel says they’ve jammed a load of symbols from the game in the design, like icons from Atsu's map and those Kintsugi cracks from her ghost mask. The towering Mount Yōtei is apparently in the centre of the console design.

If you've already got a PS5 (either the standard or the Slim/Pro models), fear not! You can also grab console covers with the designs. And the DualSense controllers will be available separately too. Everything's launching on October 2nd, the same day as the game itself.

Now, Ghost of Yōtei itself sounds pretty compelling. Atsu's on a revenge quest to take down the Yōtei Six – the blighters who killed her family and left her for dead. She's been busy learning how to fight, and she's coming back for vengeance, armed with a list of six names: The Snake, The Oni, The Kitsune, The Spider, The Dragon, and Lord Saito. Sounds like a right old rumble!

So, are these consoles works of art or just another marketing gimmick? I reckon they’re pretty snazzy looking, at least. But the real question is: will the game live up to the hype? Only time will tell, eh?
